Christmas '06

Gilly had a GREAT Christmas. Last year she didn't seem to know that anything special was going on. This year she figured out that those boxes wrapped in colorful paper had fun stuff inside, and the best part was that she could rip up the paper without mom or dad telling her "no." She got lots of gifts, and especially loves her new dolls, and her baby carriage from Grammy Kathy. Now she loads up her carriage with dolls and drags them around the apartment, saying "baby! baby!" She also got a very nice Gilly-size hardwood table that Pops made for her, so she has a place to sit and color.

Here she is with her carriage (and a pair of Lyn's underwear that she is wearing as a scarf):

reading a book at her new table:

"Pops, are there any more presents in here?"

Mount Lafayette

Two of my labmates (Brenda and Sarah) and I decided to skip work yesterday and hike Mount Lafayette. It was a beautiful sunny day and not too cold . . . at least until we hit the summit (it was a little windy up there). We ran into two other parties on the mountain, so it was nice and quiet.

This is a view is towards the south (southwest?) from the Old Bridle Path somewhere on the "agonies" (I think . . . my sense of direction is infamous)

Here are the three of us not far from where the previous picture was taken. The summit is behind us (above us, out of view). We ran into my former family practicioner (from back when I was a wee one) on the trail and he snapped this picture for us. Small world!

Washing Machine

Gilly was being very funny the other day, walking around with her sippy-cup and her stuffed pig, making "oink oink" noises. Then we noticed that she no longer had the cup and pig.

It's a Boy!

Lyn had an ultrasound yesterday, and we found out we're going to have a baby boy (due May 8th)!

Hockey

We took Gilly to see her first hockey game tonight. Two of my friends from Dartmouth are on a local team, Brenda (the goalie, a postdoc in our lab), and my classmate Anik. Gilly was mesmerized by the players skating up and down the ice . . . I think we may have a future sport for her :-) She had fun right up until our team scored the winning goal. When everybody screamed, she started to cry (she recovered quickly).

Small Places

Gilly has discovered how much fun it is to crawl into tight places, like under chairs, our desk, her highchair, and now, shelves. It's really funny to come around the corner and find her smiling at you from one of her new hiding places. Also, it's hard to believe that we were all once small enough to fit onto a pantry shelf.

I Passed!

I passed the qual. I knew it would be tough, but it was even more difficult than I imagined. I would rather have my teeth pulled than go through that experience again. Congratulations to Dan, who also passed his qual a few days ago. I think he described it best: "It was pretty much the most miserable experience of my life, but I survived."

More Posts Coming Soon

The oral portion of the qualifying exam that I mentioned previously is scheduled for Wednesday. Once this is behind me, there will be more activity on the blog. We have lots of Gilly pictures and videos waiting to be posted!

Gilly's grandpa ("Pops") is a nature photographer, and he now has a website: rogerirwinphotos.com. The website is a work-in-progress, but please check it out and see some of Pops' cool moose photos.

Gilly's Kitchen

Gilly is fast becoming a master of the kitchen. In this first photo, the culinary artiste is searching for the tools to cook her first masterpiece:

"What do you mean I'm making a mess?"
(she pulled out all of those pots and pans by herself)

Looks like Chef Gilly is going to sautée some beef for dinner.

9 Months

Gilly will be 9 months old on the 1st, and is developing very quickly. She has four teeth now, crawls super fast, pulls herself up to standing with ease, eats all kinds of solid foods, and now strings together a mixture of different sounds that almost sound like the beginnings of words. She is very entertaining, and makes us laugh as often as we make her laugh. I'll try to remember these days when she's a teenager and gets mad when we won't let her take the car.

Here are some pictures from the last few weeks:

Dramatic Reenactment

Based on actual events. No babies were harmed during this dramatic reenactment.

(we actually did find her like this, but she wouldn't repeat for the camera, so we staged it)

Quick Update

Pictures soon to come, but for now a quick update:

Gilly is now mobile. She started out with some inconsistent crawling about a week ago (maybe less?), but didn't get very far. I set her down on the rug this morning while I got her breakfast ready, and when I went back she was gone! She had crawled around the corner to the closet, and was admiring our shoes. She can also pull herself up to a standing position. She was practicing this last night, in her crib, well after midnight. The problem is she can pull herself up, but can't always ease herself back down. It makes for a noisy night.

She also has three teeth now, and has a large repertoire of babbling. She started saying "mamamamamama" on mother's day. Smart kid!

The Tooth

Gilly has two teeth, but only one is obvious in this picture (click on the image for a much larger version). The second tooth is right next to this one, but I think the drool and squash make it tough to see.

excuses, excuses

The posts may be sparse for a few weeks. I have my first annual research in progress (RIP) seminar coming up in two weeks. My qualifying exam (click, see part D) is also coming up soon. These minor distractions may keep me away from frequent blogging.

In more important news, Gilly now has TWO TEETH! Pictures to come as soon as we can capture a shot of those pearly whites.

Gilly's New Hobby

Gilly has discovered the baskets under the coffee table. She has fun pulling all the books and toys out of them.

Mary had a little lamb . . .

oops

Somehow I managed to delete a post last month. Due to popular demand, I've reposted the pictures below.

Growing Fast

Although she is still so tiny (9th percentile on the "growth charts"), Gilly seems to be growing and developing very quickly. She can sit up now without anybody holding her steady, and is able to pull herself up to a standing position (albeit a wobbly one). We've suddenly become aware of all the electrical outlets, computer cables, and other various hazards we need to secure!

More Food

Gilly's menu has expanded. She now eats two kinds of cereal, prunes, and green beans. Well, the label claims they are prunes and green beans. They really just look like purple slime, and green slime, respectively. Gilly seems to like them, but makes a really funny face when she gets the first few bites of prunes. It looks like she just bit into a lemon.
