Earlier tonight, Simon was a little grumpy. He was deliberately annoying Greta, sticking his finger in her ear, trying to push her out of the way, etc. I asked him to stop, and he refused, so I picked him up and moved him away from her.

He stomped his foot, pointed his finger at me, and shouted at me, "I WILL CRUSH YOU INTO PIECES!"

I had to leave the room so he wouldn't see me smiling :)

The Great Cake Caper

Lyn made her famous chocolate cake for my birthday. It is very dense and packed with chocolate. Did I mention the chocolate? Yeah, it's chock full of chocolate!

Needless to say, it is very tasty (and chocolatey). It is even MORE tasty, however, when consumption of aforementioned cake is unauthorized. Need proof? Just check out the smile on Greta's face:

Her accomplice in the Great Cake Caper was her big brother. Of course, he escaped before photographic evidence could be acquired, but we have a reliable eye-witness (Lyn). How, you may ask, could such a fine young boy be led astray into this life of crime? He was taught at a young age, by the queen of refrigerator pilfering, Miss Gilly.

I guess my only choice is to eat the entire cake, and help my children avoid temptation. Ahh, the sacrifices we fathers must make.

Soggy Trick-or-Treaters

Lyn reports that in spite of the rain, Gilly and Simon had a great time trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. Gilly was a sheep, another hand-crafted costume by my talented wife, and Simon was a farmer in a tractor, again . . . a Lynnie creation . . . isn't she amazing!? If it were left to me, the kids would be dressing up as ghosts, and we would have sheets with holes in them :)

Sorry! It's been a little busy around these parts. There's a little something called a "thesis" that's creeping up on me . . .

Rather than put you to sleep with my quick wit, I'll just post a photo summary of the last month or so. Some events of note: Gilly turned 4, she's back in school, and she's taking dance classes. Greta has 4 teeth, crawls like a pro, and pulls herself up to standing. Simon is mostly busy being cute, his bushy golden curls getting lots of attention wherever we go, and is a wonderful big brother to Greta, giving her lots of attention and assistance, whether she likes it or not :)

Hiking in the Rain

We went for a short father-daughter hike this morning, on a small hill nearby. It was raining, but Gilly really needed to get out of the house and burn off some energy, or we were ALL going to go crazy. It turned out well, since the rain tapered off about midway through our hike.

It was fun to see Gilly get excited about things that I would never notice, like the rock she's posing next to (below). She was walking along and all of a sudden started yelling, "turtle rock! turtle rock!" (You can see the "eyes" and "mouth")

We also spotted loads of salamanders. I've never seen so many! They must be having a great summer, with all of the rain. I lost count of how many we saw, well into the dozens.

We also saw this creepy-crawly spider. It was pretty big, and had spun its web right across the trail at eye level. I almost walked into it (yuck).

And so it begins . . . they have learned to set aside their differences and collaborate against the common enemy: BEDTIME.

According to Lyn, Gilly and Simon asked to go to sleep in our bed the other night. This is a common occurrence lately. They fall asleep in our bed, and we transport them back to their own rooms once they're zonked out. Well, at least that's the case with Gilly. Simon usually ends up causing trouble, waking up Greta (who is in a crib in our room), jumping on the bed, etc.

Well, apparently Lyn went to go check on them after a bit. On her way to the room, she heard giggling, from ALL THREE of them (Greta had been asleep). The pictures below tell the rest of the story. They were having a grand old time, and Greta thinks her brother and sister are hilarious (so do we).

Trail Maintenance

A few years ago I adopted a section of the Garfield Ridge Trail, from Mount Lafayette to Mount Garfield, part of the Appalachian Trail in the White Mountains. Exactly what it means to "adopt" a trail is a bit of a mystery to most people who ask me about it. Basically, it means I have agreed to take care of the basic trail maintenance. A recent post in the AMC Trails Blog (click) explains it very well.

The next post (click) in that blog, honors Barbara Kukla as the Trails Volunteer of the Month. She was the previous adopter of my section of trail . . . for 20 YEARS! I hope I do as good a job taking care of the trail as she did.

Weekend at the Second College Grant

We spent Memorial Day weekend with friends at the Second College Grant up in northern NH. Take a Hike

We took the kids for a hike yesterday afternoon, and taught them the fine art of roasting hotdogs on a stick over a roaring campfire. Ok, so it was a tiny fire, and the hotdogs were lukewarm. My campcraft skills aren't what they used to be :)

Most importantly, we had lots of fun. We did find out that, while Simon does well going uphill, those little legs don't do so well going DOWNHILL. After a half-dozen faceplants, we decided to carry him down . . . and he fell asleep (last picture).

The end of the day can get a little hectic around here. Gilly and Simon are often tired by then, but paradoxically, are wired and bouncing off the walls (literally). In the interest of maintaining sanity and keeping the kids out of the kitchen while dinner was being prepared, I played a movie to distract them. I decided to mix it up a little, so instead of Sesame Street or Angelina Ballerina, tonight's pre-dinner entertainment was a ski movie, "Anomaly" by Teton Gravity Research.

It's chock full of skiers and snowboarders jumping off cliffs, riding steep and deep slopes, and various on-snow mayhem all over the world. Not surprisingly, Gilly the wild-child LOVED it. She started jumping off the coffee table, practicing her cliff jumps . . .

Once again, sorry for the lack of posts. It turns out three kids can keep you very busy. Whodathunkit.

Christmas was GREAT! Seemed kind of like a blur though. I think we were a little sleep-deprived (courtesy of the new baby), and sick (courtesy of our preschooler).

Greta is doing well, getting very chunky and smiling quite a bit lately. Simon just LOVES his new baby sister . . . sometimes more than Greta prefers. Gilly is having fun in school, and when she's home she spends much of her time dressing up in various outfits, including bathing suits, snow suits, and "princess dresses," and also combinations of all of the above.

I'm sure I have more news, but it's past my bedtime (9:30 . . . what a wild and crazy guy) and my brain isn't running at top speed right now. I did finally manage to get a research paper published. You can read it here (click) if you want something to help you fall asleep.

Gilly and Simon had lots of fun on Halloween. First they went trick-or-treating during the day, over at the Tuck School of Business, then Gilly and I went around at night. Lyn was super-crafty again this year, and made the turtle costume that Gilly is wearing below. Initially, Simon was the turtle and Gilly dressed up as a princess. When it was time for Gilly and I to go out after dark, she decided to be a turtle. Simon had no idea that his costume was being swiped, so we just went with it.

Unfortunately we didn't get any pictures of Gilly and Simon together (one of our friends might have snapped a few pictures), but we did get a couple of Gilly in the turtle costume.

It's been quite a month for Gilly. Her third birthday was on the 1st of the month, she had multiple birthday parties, and started preschool last week. She LOVES school, and doesn't want to leave when we pick her up (she has no problems at all when we drop her off). Lyn reports that Simon likes his sister-free time. Vaccinations

The topic of vaccinations and autism seems to pop up in conversation every now and then. Since I'm a graduate student in biochemistry, people sometimes think I have more general medical knowledge than I do, and are interested in my opinion. I'm not an expert on immunology, and I know almost nothing about autism. The only advantage I might have is that I have to read many articles from science journals. Therefore, I'm comfortable reading studies published on topics unrelated to my research (if I come across something I don't understand, I have lots of practice searching for information and figuring it out).

We have kids, so obviously I was aware of vaccines and the concerns about a possible link between autism and the mercury compound used as a preservative in some vaccines. I did a little bit of reading at the time Gilly was having her first vaccinations, and also asked for opinions from others who likely knew more about the subject than I did. There really didn't seem to be a link between the vaccines and autism, and I was comfortable having our kids vaccinated.

I still haven't read much more about the topic, but I've seen nothing to change my mind. The data linking vaccines and autism appear to be weak, at best. Vaccines protect us from many dangerous diseases, and it just seems like a bad idea to avoid vaccinations. If you're worried about vaccines and autism, I STRONGLY encourage you to read the articles posted at the following links:

Simon has started to walk around more. This has given him a new perspective . . . literally, not metaphorically. He can now see things that were previously hidden from view. I took Gilly and Simon to the playground this morning while Lyn went to go have some kid-free time. The weather was nice, and a few of the other neighborhood kids were out there too. I had a funny conversation with a couple of the kids, one who is 5 years old (and another little girl, maybe 3?).

Boy: "Adam, my dad is 28"

Me: "Oh, he is?"

Boy: "He's younger than you."

Me: "Yes, he is."

Boy: "He's a bit taller than you too."

Simon crawls very well now and can also pull himself up to standing. However, he still lacks the agility necessary to commit crimes. That's where his accomplice, Gilly, comes into the picture. They have learned to utilize Gilly's safe-cracking ability, and Simon's bloodhound-like nose to access and detect high-value targets in the refrigerator.

Don't Put That In Your Mouth

We frequently (constantly, it seems), have to tell Gilly to stop putting things in her mouth. If it's something gross or some sort of biohazard, we tell her "don't put that in your mouth, it will make you sick!"

We planned to go visit Lyn's family on Sunday, but both Grammy and Pops have the cold/flu/something-nasty, so we decided to wait until next week. Last night, Lyn told Gilly that we wouldn't be going to visit them on Sunday, and explained to her that they were "sick."

This is the annual recruiting weekend for the Molecular and Cellular Biology program at Dartmouth, when some of the applicants are invited to the campus for interviews. Tonight was the last night of recruiting weekend, and they always have a big party for the recruits at the Dartmouth Outing Club.

I decided to bring Gilly to the party for a little while, since some of my classmates haven't seen her in a long time. She was pretty shy, and had her face buried in my shoulder nearly the entire time we were there, though she did come up for air long enough to eat a cookie.

When we were leaving, I set her down so I could put my coat on, and all of a sudden she became very animated. She was really excited, gesturing enthusiastically at one of the bucks mounted on the wall (for you flatlanders, that's an antlered deer head mounted on the wall . . . somebody's hunting trophy). The music was just loud enough that I couldn't hear her, so I leaned down and asked her what she was saying. With a big smile she said:

"That's Santa's reindeer!"

Watch Your Toes

Simon is teething, and if he can reach it, he's going to bite it. He was playing on the floor near the couch this morning, and I made the mistake of dangling a toe too close to his chompers. My toe must have looked mighty tasty, because he bit it HARD. I think my suprised yell of pain will discourage any further canabalism on his part. He reminds me of Sunny from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Christmas Tree

We got our tree a few days ago. It gets redecorated every day, since Gilly removes most of the low-hanging ornaments each morning to play with them. Don't worry, all ornaments that could be weaponized are up high, out of Gilly-range.

She is currently behind me as I type this, playing with two small wooden moose ornaments ("mommy moose" and "daddy moose"), and a large clay santa claus. Oh, and a duck. They appear to be going for a ride on a toboggan (also an ornament).

It's hard to see in the picture below (a little blurry), but she is holding one of the moose. The two moose are definitely her favorite . . . hmm, you'd never guess what her Pops' favorite photography subject is.
